Keeping you and your home safe against gas

It’s Gas Safety Week, so we’re sharing why it’s so important that you take care of your gas appliances

9 September 2024

Badly fitted and poorly serviced gas appliances can cause gas leaks, fires, explosions and carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning. CO is a highly poisonous gas that can kill quickly and without warning, as you cannot see it, taste it or smell it. One in six homes has a dangerous gas appliance so it’s vital you have your appliances checked annually.

How we help to keep you safe

At Hastoe we take your safety seriously, and are legally required to provide annual gas safety checks. It’s essential that you give our contractors access to your home to test your appliances and ensure they are gas safe. We know that it can be worrying to let someone you don’t know into your home. All of our contractors will have their Gas Safe ID card with them, so for peace of mine always ask to see your contractor’s ID card.

Keeping you and your home safe

By ensuring your gas appliances are properly tested and checked, you are taking care of your home and your health. We recommend you encourage friends and family to do the same. Follow and share these few simple checks to keep you and your loved ones safe.

  • Check for warning signs that could indicate your appliances are faulty. Signs may include lazy yellow/orange flames instead of crisp blue ones on your gas hob, black marks on or around your gas appliances, a pilot light that keeps going out and a lot of condensation in the room.
  • Know the six main symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning – headaches, dizziness, breathlessness, nausea, collapse and loss of consciousness. If you’re suffering from a number of these symptoms, it’s important to get your gas appliances checked immediately.
  • Install an audible carbon monoxide alarm and look out for your community by making sure your friends and family have one too. You can buy an alarm from DIY shops, supermarkets or your energy supplier but you want to make sure they are marked EN50291 and display the British Standards’ Kitemark.
