With support from North Devon Council’s Enhanced Outreach Team, Hastoe Housing Association and the Salvation Army, he has been able to rebuild his life and now looks forward to a brighter future.
Find out more about Alan's story and why his new home means "everything" to him.
A fresh start
Alan has lived in North Devon his entire life and spent many years in the local area where he is now housed. Sleeping rough for seven years, he faced daily struggles without the security of a home. Alan was recently able to get support to access vital services, including healthcare, financial support and housing assistance. This long journey of perseverance ultimately led to the life-changing opportunity of his own affordable home in a rural community. Securing an affordable home in a place he knows well has allowed him to reconnect with his community and rebuild his life in familiar surroundings.
A safe and secure future
For Alan, moving into his new home has meant everything. Having a secure place to live has given him hope and a foundation to focus on his well-being and future goals. “It means I have the base I need to get well and fulfil my aims to improve myself,” he explains.
Adjusting
Transitioning from homelessness to independent living has been a challenge, but one that Alan has embraced. Learning to manage bills, maintain his home and take care of day-to-day tasks has been an adjustment but he values the independence that comes with having a place of his own. “It’s been hard work but I love having a home of my own,” he says.
The best part
When asked about the most rewarding aspect of his new home, Alan’s answer is simple yet profound: “Being able to shut the door and being safe and warm.” The comfort and stability that come with having a secure home have been life-changing and he is enjoying the process of making the space his own.
Looking ahead
Now that Alan has a stable home, he has plans to personalise and improve his living space by installing a shower in his bathroom and redecorating his kitchen and bedroom.
The importance of rural affordable housing
Alan’s story is a powerful example of how rural affordable housing can provide a vital lifeline for those experiencing homelessness. With the right support and a secure place to call home, people like Alan can regain independence, rebuild their lives and look forward to a brighter future.
