Building futures for Curdridge Primary schoolchildren

Local children visit neighbouring housing development to see construction in action.

Children from Curdridge Primary School in Hampshire have welcomed the opportunity to visit a neighbouring housing development, to learn more about the world of construction and the type of jobs carried out on a building site.

The affordable homes being built in the village of Curdridge are expected to house some of the families and future pupils of schools in the local area, including Curdridge Primary School. Almost 20 children and staff from the school’s Reception class (ages 4-5) visited the site of the housing development, just a short walk from the school building.

The visit was co-ordinated by Hastoe Housing Association and Shopland Gray, the contractor building the 8 affordable homes on behalf of Hastoe.

The children had a fantastic time visiting Hastoe’s new housing development in the village. They had a tour of the site, saw some construction equipment in action and learned more about what it’s like to work in construction. It was a super learning experience for the children.

Sally Wood, Head Teacher Curdridge Primary School

The children were very excited and it was great to see them taking so much interest. Our team was on hand to escort them around the site, showing them the different stages of the build and giving them the opportunity to get close to some of the equipment.

As a housing association that works to support rural communities, we know how valuable these learning opportunities can be. It’s great that so many local young people have been able to visit our site in Curdridge, taking advantage of a hands-on learning experience and finding out all about the world of construction in the process.

Chris Meadows, Regional Development Manager Hastoe Housing

Works began on the site in December 2023 and the 8 homes are expected to be completed in July 2025. This scheme has been a number of years in the planning, with Curdridge Parish Council a key driver and advocate for the development. The scheme is a rural exception site, delivering much-needed social rent and shared ownership homes, prioritised for local people. All homes are being built to Hastoe's New-Build Standard.
