Hastoe’s Higher Shippon development in Cheriton Bishop has been recognised in the Rural Housing Awards, which celebrate excellence and commitment in delivering affordable housing to rural communities in Devon.
The development of eight new homes, built in partnership with the Cheriton Bishop Community Land Trust (CLT), won the awards' Best Rural Development category. It was judged by Professor Matt Lobley, Co-Director of the Centre for Rural Policy Research and Ken Browse, Chairman of the National Association of Local Councils, who looked at the standard of design, consideration of the local vernacular, and engagement with the local community during development.
The Devon Rural Housing Partnership, who organised the awards, said: “The judges found this development to be attractive with a great sense of space and high standard of sustainability.
“They felt the homes complement the local area, with slate roofs and practical porches that blend in well, whilst the air source heat pumps and mechanical ventilation with heat recovery help to keep fuel bills low and make the homes more sustainable."
Sitting on the border of Dartmoor National Park in the scenic Devonshire countryside, Higher Shippon was designed to reflect the rural nature of its surroundings. Throughout its creation, Hastoe also worked closely with the Cheriton Bishop CLT and local residents who strongly supported the need for more affordable housing in the village.
Offering a mix of eight flats and houses of different sizes, all of the new homes on the development are provided on an affordable rent basis and prioritised for those with a local connection to Cheriton Bishop.
We collaborated closely with the Cheriton Bishop community to design and build a development that would enable local residents to remain living in the village they were born and raised in. This award recognises the hard work and determination of everyone involved, and celebrates these eight new high-quality and affordable homes.
