Hastoe welcomes Habitable Homes Bill

19/01/2018
Hastoe Chief Executive, Sue Chalkley, welcomes Government support for Bill to crack down on low standards in the rented sector.

The Homes (Fitness for Human Habitation and Liability for Housing Standards) Bill was debated and passed through 2nd Reading stage in Parliament today.

The Bill requires all landlords (both social and private sector) to ensure their property is fit for human habitation throughout a tenancy.

It also gives tenants legal rights to take landlords to court if their home does not meet these standards.

Commenting on the Bill, Hastoe Chief Executive, Sue Chalkley, said:

“I welcome this Bill to ensure every rented home is safe for living. No person or family should have to spend a single day in a property unfit for human habitation.”

“The fact the Bill is backed by the Government – and was voted for unanimously - shows a welcome focus from Ministers on improving the quality of this country’s housing. I hope the Bill becomes law this year.”
