Hastoe Takes Part in National Home Energy Research

In order to understand residents’ energy use and tackle fuel poverty, Hastoe has taken part in the National Energy Study.

Involving more than 500 homes nationwide, Hastoe took part in the study with 12 other housing providers over the course of winter 2014 – 2015.

In terms of energy usage, the study showed that 15% of the Hastoe residents involved experienced difficulties with their energy bills over the winter period. Overall the research found that residents would benefit from advice on how to use heating controls, as they may be unnecessarily wasting energy in the summer months.

It also showed that ‘combi’ boilers may not be producing the energy savings expected due to user error, and that simple advice could help residents reach their full energy saving and bill reducing potential.

In terms of electricity, figures showed that 78% of all the residents involved are unaware of the prices they are actually paying for electricity. On the other hand, Hastoe residents who said that they were carrying out electricity saving behaviours used 28% less electricity than those who did not.

Hastoe’s Chief Executive, Sue Chalkley said; “Many of our residents are concerned about their energy bills as winter approaches, and we want to help them make the most of limited budgets.

“Understanding the interaction between homes and people when it comes to energy is vital if we are to help people save money throughout the year. Taking part in this piece of research will give us the tools to make that easier.”

The National Energy Study involved 5,600 meter readings in 524 homes.
Readings were taken over a six month period, along with resident habits,
approaches and attitudes to energy gleaned through questionnaires, interviews and home visits from ‘energy doctors’.
