The Bishop of Chelmsford Officially Opens New Housing Development

17/10/2012
The Bishop of Chelmsford officially opened a new affordable Hastoe housing scheme called Pandan Close, in West Hanningfield, on Monday 15 October.

Following the initial Housing Needs survey and an update carried out by Hastoe in 2005, it was apparent that there was a great need for a local needs housing project. A total of 12 affordable homes and three open market dwellings have been provided on land made available by Essex and Suffolk Water.

Priority for the affordable dwellings is for local people now and in the future. The open market houses which were built on land within the development boundary were also sold to local people. With support from the Homes and Communities Agency and Chelmsford City Council, the homes were completed in October 2011.

The scheme has achieved Code for Sustainable HomesLevel4. Features include: Ground source heat pumps as the primary source of heating and hot water, improved insulation and air tightness, water saving taps and shower fittings, low energy lighting, recycling facilities, bicycle storage and water butts.

A break-down of the property types is as follows:

1 x 1 bed bungalow
2 x 2 bed bungalows

The Bishop of Chelmsford, Rt Rev Stephen Cottrell, said:

“I’m delighted to see partnership working and this is a fine example which has enabled rural communities to become more sustainable. There is a clear need for new people to come into a community but it is equally as important to ensure local people have the ability to stay. The scheme at West Hanningfield has certainly achieved this.”

John Lefever, Regional Head of Development, for Hastoe East region, said:
“We are pleased to have been able to provide these much needed new homes in West Hanningfield in partnership with Chelmsford City Council, for local people who will really benefit from and appreciate them. We are also very grateful to the Homes and Communities Agency for the investment that helped make this happen.”
