Homes for local people in Porlock

21/08/2012
The new affordable housing scheme at Villes Lane, Porlock, is now well underway with some homes now built up to roof level.

The development is set to complete on schedule in early 2013. There will be 15 homes in total, all two, three and four-bedroom family homes  and they will be allocated to local people as a priority.

Alan Wright, Chairman of Porlock Parish Council said:
"We have really struggled to provide affordable housing for those with a close association to Porlock. When we did our Parish Plan a few years ago, providing local homes for local people, particularly young families with children, was seen as a top priority by the whole community. We are therefore delighted to see these houses becoming available and urge everyone in housing need with a strong Porlock connection to put their names forward. Don’t miss this unique opportunity."

Top priority will be given to people who can demonstrate a strong connection to the Porlock Parish, or the adjoining parishes of Selworthy, Luccombe, Exmoor, or Oare. In the event of this not identifying enough people, connection to the rest of the National Park area would be considered.

“We already have details of some people who seem to meet the criteria,” says Colin Savage, Rural Housing Enabler, “but it is important that everyone that is looking for affordable housing in the Porlock area gets in touch. The chances are that these houses will free up other affordable homes in the village, meaning we will be able to help even more people. There will be families who have moved away and want to move back, but it is hard for us to know who these people are.”

Anyone who is interested in housing in Porlock should contact the Rural Housing Project and ensure they are registered with Homefinder Somerset, otherwise they will not be able to apply for the homes.

If all other factors are equal, preference will be given to those who have been registered with Homefinder longest.

Cllr. Keith Turner, Housing Portfolio Holder at West Somerset Council said "West Somerset Council are delighted to support the delivery of affordable homes for local people, particularly in rural areas such as Porlock.  It is always exciting when homes reach this stage in their development and I would urge anyone interested to register as soon as possible in order to ensure they do not miss out."

Hastoe is building the homes, with financial support from the Homes and Communities Agency. A total of 12 homes will be rented at affordable rent levels, which are set at 80% of open market rents. The remaining three will be sold on a shared ownership basis. The same local connection criteria will apply, and anyone interested in these should contact SW Homes on 0300 100 0021 and the Hastoe sales team on 0800 783 3097.

Brian Carroll, Head of Development for Hastoe, comments:
“We are very pleased to be providing these high-quality new homes which are much needed by people in the local area. We look forward to finishing work on the project and being able to help those who are in real housing need.”
