Community development

Hastoe is committed to leading in the 'creation of sustainable homes and sustainable communities'. We offer innovative and effective ways to involve our residents in the work we do and provide ways for them to address their housing and community priorities. Within our communities there is a wealth of knowledge and expertise and as a housing association we are ideally placed to deliver services for these neighbourhoods and communities as well as encourage and support community engagement and empowerment.

Community Grants
We are committed to supporting our residents who want to make positive changes and create new opportunities in the area in which they live.  We know that sometimes projects need some funding to get them up and running or keep them going year on year.  Our Community Grants fund offers grants up to £250 to help deliver community-based projects which benefit Hastoe residents and their local community.

Over the last few years we have supported community play areas, village fetes and village halls and local schools.  The grants are open to applications throughout the year and we welcome applications for previously funded projects (subject to availability of funds).

If you need some help to get an idea off the ground or if you are already fundraising for a larger project, our grant might be right up your street.  The grants are available for formal or informal resident and community groups.  You can download and fill in the application form and post it or email it to us.  For more information please contact us on 0300 123 2250.

Hastoe Orchard
Fruit orchards are important sources of local food and contribute to biodiversity.  In 2010 we launched the Hastoe Orchard scheme where we offer residents free fruit trees to plant in their gardens or communities.

In November 2014 the 1000th tree was planted in the Hastoe Orchard, and our orchard now includes over 1300 apple, pear, cherry, plum, and quince trees.  If you would like a fruit tree - from a choice of eating apple, cooking apple, pear, plum or cherry and you haven't had a Hastoe Orchard tree before, please contact us on 0300 123 2250.  Trees are usually about 6ft to 10ft tall when delivered and grow to about 13 ft.  It is a maximum of one tree per household and trees are subject to availability.

The Bernard Herridge Charity
The Bernard Herridge Charity Hastoe is a corporate trustee of the Bernard Herridge charity. The objective of the charity is to provide support to meet the needs of older poeple in Somerset. Currently it provides housing in six bungalows in Wincanton, but we were keen to entend this work to projects that make a real difference and have an impact on people's lives, addressing the disadvantages that older people face.  Since 2011, the charity has been supporting the Somerset Village Agents scheme operated by the Community Council for Somerset.    Village Agents are trained to put people in contact with organisations which provide services they need, provide high quality information and promote health and independence.

Plunkett Foundation
We are supporting the Plunkett Foundation to help rural communities through community-ownership to take control of the issues affecting them. There are over 300 community-owned shops across the UK, thriving in an economic climate that has seen many villages lose their shop or pub and delivering a vital service to their local communities.

Helping Communities become Dementia Friendly
Dementia Friends is a national initiative that is being run by the Alzheimer's Society which aims to make communities more dementia-friendly by increasing understanding of dementia and the small things that others can do that could make a difference to people living with it.  As this is an issue which affects our residents and our staff we are raising awareness of the campaign and encouraging people to get involved by becoming a Dementia Friend or a Dementia Friends Champion.  More details can be found at:  www.dementiafriends.org.uk
