Hastoe has appointed regional contractor Raolco to help it trial cutting edge low carbon technology as part of its “Retrofit for the Future” project at Gaymer Memorial Cottages, near Attleborough, Norfolk.
Hastoe’s project was selected for funding from 190 proposals to a national competition, run by the Government’s Technology and Strategy Board.

Gaymer Memorial CottagesHousing represents 27% of the UK’s total carbon emissions and the Government has set a target for an 80% reduction in these emissions by 2050. The project will be monitored for two years by the Energy Saving Trust to determine its success and the results will be shared to help the affordable and private sector retrofit their homes to meet energy efficient standards.

Peter Thomson, Business Development Manager at Roalco said: “Roalco has taken the stance that as a service provider we must, where ever possible, adapt to, and adopt our client’s ethos. Our partnership with Hastoe in the Retrofit for the Future project at Gaymer Memorial Cottages mirrors our own goals and ambitions. We are proud and pleased to be working together on this project”.

Clare Hendry, Sustainability Manager at Hastoe said: “We are looking forward to starting on site now the tendering process is complete. Roalco are a forward thinking organisation and their commitment to making new innovative technologies work will help achieve a modern, warm and affordable home for the future resident, Mrs Lawrence.”

Mrs Lawrence, added: “I am looking forward to seeing how the building changes over the coming months and learning about how the green features will improve the quality of my future home. I saw the cottages being built in the 1940s and never imagined that they would be part of a project like this.”

Hastoe is also working with ECD Architects to design and implement the retrofit. Some of the innovations to be used in the project include advance insulation products known as ‘spacetherm,’ and heating and hot water via an air source heat pump and solar panels. They will help reduce the carbon emissions at this property by around 90%.
