Hastoe Homes completed in South Tawton

Six new affordable homes in South Tawton, Devon, are now ready for residents to move into.

New residents have moved into new affordable homes in the village of South Tawton in Dartmoor National Park.

The six home development – a mix of one, two and three bedroom properties - was completed on 6th September. The properties will be let at affordable rates, with people who live and work in South Tawton given first preference to live in the homes.

Rural housing specialists, Hastoe Housing Association, delivered the scheme and will manage the properties. The homes, constructed over the last year, were built to the highly energy-efficient AECB Building Standard, reducing fuel bills to a fraction of the normal cost.

The scheme was supported by funding from government body, Homes England, and West Devon Borough Council. It was designed to meet a local housing need for affordable rented properties and rents will be kept lower than market rate, now and forever, for local people.

Central Devon MP, Mel Stride, who visited the scheme in construction in January, said:

“It’s really positive news that local families have now moved into the new affordable homes at South Tawton. This development will help families remain in the rural community in which they were born and raised. My congratulations to all who have worked so hard to deliver these homes which will be a fantastic asset for South Tawton for generations to come.”

Andrew Potter, Chief Executive of Hastoe, said: “This development will provide quality, affordable homes for local people in South Tawton forever. It’s great to see new residents moving in and being able to continue to live and work in their local area. A special thanks to landowner, Lawrence Jones, for working with Hastoe to deliver the homes. It’s a fantastic legacy to the community.”

Cllr Caroline Mott, West Devon Borough Council’s, Lead Member for Strategic Planning and Housing, said: “We are delighted to work with our partners Hastoe Housing Association in bringing forward a scheme which will see affordable and quality rented housing for South Tawton residents. It’s fantastic that these affordable homes are targeted to those who already have strong links with the area and want to remain in the locality near family, friends and work.”

Versha Koria, Senior Specialist, Home Ownership and Supply for Homes England in the South West said: “We know that these small rural schemes in areas like the National Park can make a huge difference to people’s lives.

“These new homes are an excellent example of how Homes England is using the Affordable Homes Programme to support communities like South Tawton and ensure local people can continue to live and work in the villages and towns they love.”
