Hastoe Passivhaus Homes record top performance

02/03/2018
An independent report shows Hastoe's Passivhaus development in Wimbish, Essex, is continuing to deliver heating bills for as little as £130 per year.

Independent analysis of the UK’s first rural, social housing Passivhaus scheme shows the homes are still highly energy efficient and delivering heating bills as low as £30 per quarter.

A performance review of Hastoe Housing Association’s Passivhaus development in Wimbish, Essex, reveals “no deterioration” has been identified and gas consumption remains “very low” – over six years after the scheme was first opened in 2011. It also confirms high levels of resident comfort throughout the properties.

Passivhaus is highly energy-efficient method of building, promoted by the Passivhaus Institute in Darmstadt, Germany. The technique, based on exceptional air-tightness and mechanical ventilation, can cut heating bills to a fraction of the current UK average. The report, written by Martin Ingham at Linktreat Ltd, assesses whether the Wimbish homes are continuing to perform to this high standard.

The Wimbish development is occupied by residents with little prior interest in energy efficiency – showing how the Passivhaus model consistently reduces heating bills for a broad range of residents.

Commenting on the report, Ulrike Maccariello, Head of Development at Hastoe, said:

“This report proves that the Passivhaus homes are delivering exactly what they intended – much lower energy bills and a comfortable environment for residents.”

“It’s not a gimmick – Passivhaus works and continues to provide residents with very low heating bills. This is particularly important in rural areas, where homes are more likely to be off-gas and bills more expensive.”

“I’m glad the report continues to confirm these high standards and make the case for all housing providers to build more Passivhaus developments.”
